Chinese New Year is the celebration of the Lunar New Year. In China, people celebrate the New Year based on the moon, not by the month. The Chinese use a system called the Zodiac to assign an animal to each year. The Zodiac includes 12 animals: the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the ram, the monkey, the chicken, the dog, and the pig. This year is the year of the Dragon. If you were born in the year of the dragon, then this is your lucky year.
On Chinese New Year, people older than you will give you red and gold envelopes. Do you know what is in the envelopes???? The answer is..... MONEY$$$$$!!! This money is considered lucky. If you go to Chinatown on Chinese New Year, you might see festivities such as lion dances, parades, and special stalls selling things for good luck.
