Hurricane Sandy was a recent natural disaster. Hurricane Sandy lasted for a total of approximately 10 days. The worst of the storm was around October 25th, 2012. It affected all the New England areas, Caribbean and mid-Atlantic ocean. There was much devastation, including flooding, and no electricity. Around 250 people were killed as a result of Hurricane Sandy. According to Live Science, the death toll was at least 149. Those are some general facts relating to Hurricane Sandy.
Hurricane Sandy is the second costliest hurricane in US history, behind Hurricane Katrina. Many were left with no power. The subways and tunnels were flooded, leaving some people with no way of transportation. The cost is about $65.6 billion, in USD. Hurricane Katrina costed 108 billion.
The good parts about it were donations. A television concert, commercial free, aired on NBC called Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together, featured artists like Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Fallon, Mary J. Blige and many more talented celebrities. All of the money made was donated to American Red Cross. ABC held a "Day of Giving", raising 17 million for American Red Cross, too. News Corp.donated 1 million to relief efforts in the New York Metropolitan region. WFP and United Nations said they will send help to 500,000 people in Santiago de Cuba. On the third of December, it was proclaimed, in Madison Square Garden on December 12, 12-12-12: The Concert For Sandy Relief would take place. Many channels would record the four hour concert. Some celebrities who took part in that were The Who, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, Paul McCartney, Bon Jovi, and many other performed. Various websites would say they would air the concert online.
The Senate approved a relief bill on the 28th of December to supply $60 billion dollars for states destructed by the hurricane. The House delayed action until the next session, which starts January 3rd. They also have promised to vote on a flood insurance bill an aid package later on.
